The Monarch Apartments is Anawim Housing's conversion of a previous Days Inn hotel on Merle Hay Road into 40 Permanent Supportive Housing apartments with 24-hour onsite supportive services to house those currently experiencing literal homelessness. The project is the first of its kind in Iowa - a model we plan to replicate as an innovative and effective way to meet a critical housing need in our community.


Anawim believes everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Anawim has provided permanent supportive housing (PSH) in Polk County for 27 years. We are excited to bring our expertise to this, first of its kind in Iowa, hotel to housing, Monarch Apartments. The Monarch will address the needs of our community’s most vulnerable by employing evidence-based practices and a trauma-informed, person-centered approach. HUD policy gaps often exclude individuals from PSH programs due to a strict definition of chronicity or challenges in proving homelessness. Anawim’s experience and expertise allows us to bridge these system-level gaps, offering a sustainable solution to meet the broader need for permanent housing.

Serving Our Community

Housing First Model

Anawim operates under the Housing First model; removing barriers, and moving people into housing as quickly as possible. Tenants at the Monarch will benefit from their own lease, on-site Program and Case Managers, peer support, and continuing opportunities to build community with other tenants through communal meals, and scheduled, social, activities. We will work individually with tenants on housing stability, improved whole-person health, and personal goals. We will also collaborate with service providers to ensure tenants have access to all the resources they need to meet their goals.

Services might include mental health, substance use support and safety planning, job support and more. By having trained and certified staff and support onsite, we will be able to mitigate issues immediately when they occur and provided tenants the support they need, when they need it.
